In recognition of International Women’s Day – 8 March 2025 – the EPA is pleased to announce this webinar on “Women Alcohol and Substance Use Disorder, Including the Perinatal Period”, taking place on Monday, 10 March 2025, from 16:30 to 18:00 CET. This joint webinar is organised by the EPA Section on Women Mental Health and the EPA Section on Addictive Behaviours.
Women are gradually losing the protection they had from historic social roles against addictive disorders in almost all countries.
The first presenter, Prof Florence Thibaut, will speak about women alcohol use disorders including perinatal period. She will review the literature available to further explore gender differences which may result in specific clinical features of alcohol use in women. In the results in general, girls and women seem more influenced by beliefs about self-image as well as by female friends or role models when they use alcohol. As compared to men, women use more often alcohol to cope with stress and negative feelings. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics differences, reward process specificities, and female hormones play a major role in gender differences observed in alcohol use disorders. Therefore, health consequences differ. Finally, women’s consumption of alcohol use may be associated with serious birth and developmental consequences in babies exposed during pregnancy. In conclusion further research is needed to best adapt care management in women. Systematic assessment of alcohol use is necessary in all pregnant women.
The second presenter, Prof. Jan K Melichar, will focus on the significant clinical benefits of long acting injectable/implantable buprenorphine (LAIB, Buvidal, Sublocade). He will explore the treatment of addiction in women during the perinatal period including the significant allostatic benefit of LAIB and the development of detoxification and cutting-edge trauma pathways for those on it, which have allowed them to reclaim their lives, returning to their families and work. Beside the webinar pays attention the importance of the addictive behaviours among women in the perinatal period, it gives new therapeutic overview of the potential benefit of the long-acting buprenorphine treatment.
