ICD-11 Diagnostic Guidelines for Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders: An Online Comprehensive Course for Psychiatrists

9 April – 30 April, 2021 (four weekly sessions)

Sponsored by the European Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Mental Health, Naples, Italy

Course Directors: Geoffrey M. Reed and Mario Maj

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The ICD-11 was approved by the World Health Assembly in May 2019. European countries are actively planning and will be among the first to implement the ICD-11 for health reporting and statistical purposes during the next few years. The new ICD-11 Diagnostic Guidelines for Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, build on more than three decades of advances in research and practice since the publication of the ICD-10.

This 4-week online course will provide an overview of the key principles of the WHO’s ICD-11 and in-depth knowledge about the ICD-11 Diagnostic Guidelines, produced to guide implementation of the diagnostic system in clinical settings by psychiatrists and other relevant mental health professionals. World leaders in the field who were directly involved in the development of the guidelines will provide a detailed discussion of the core areas most relevant to psychiatric practice, including an overview of the scientific foundations of the ICD-11’s diagnostic approach. The course will emphasize active participation through application of the new guidelines to clinical cases and discussion of diagnostic dilemmas. The ICD-11 Diagnostic Guidelines for each diagnostic area covered will be provided to course participants.

The course is highly relevant to the assessment of psychopathology and the diagnosis of mental and behavioural disorders in clinical practice. Regardless of the diagnostic system currently in use in their countries for health reporting and statistics, psychiatrists will benefit from learning and applying these groundbreaking new diagnostic guidelines in their research and practice.
